Stradbroke Island

Design: 9 months
Build: 12 months
Budget: $1.3M

The Stradbroke Island Residences was awarded ‘Best Medium Density Residential, Sustainable Homes’ in QLD & Australia in 2006.  The design brief stipulated three stand alone dwellings that would function both as separate holiday homes and together as a well-being centre.

Building on an island offered its own challenges.  Using the steel portal frame method of construction ensured as little building time on site as possible. Within the first month all three dewllings were erected with the roof on! The portal frames also allowed the wide open spaces as pictured on the upper levels.

A simple yet ingenious aspect of the development was to locate the cars in a common garage on the boundary of the block.  This allowed a landscaped environment to be created between the three houses offering a micro climate intrinsic to the final resort style aesthetic.
